Karla’s priorities for Washington County are the following
I will advocate for fiscally responsible budgets that will provide essential services efficiently while investing in necessary infrastructure, transportation needs, and public safety. Each item should be scrutinized to determine if taxpayers’ money is being appropriately allocated.
As a Washington County Commissioner, I would advocate for the county becoming more involved in promoting economic development in close partnership with businesses and local community officials to help Washington County grow and expand our business tax base.
The County Board needs to make sure the necessary improvements are being made to our roadway corridors in a timely fashion. The core of county government is making sure there is adequate funding to keep up with repair and reconstruction of roads. I will work closely with board partners and local government officials to ensure we get projects completed on time and on budget.
Safe communities are vital to economic development and the quality of life for residents of Washington County. I will work with the Washington County Sheriff, County Attorney, and local government partners to ensure the safety of our communities. People want to raise families and start businesses in safe communities. My commitment is to keep our communities safe!
SENIOR AND VETERAN SERVICES
As Washington County Commissioner, I will promote the services we have available for our seniors and veterans. We need to make sure that those who need services know what is available to them and how to access those services easily and effectively.
The county needs to invest in additional transit options in order to advance economic development, reduce traffic congestion, increase mobility options for citizens, and improve the environment. The primary objective is to increase ridership in the area to make the Red Rock transit corridor successful. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a reasonable first step to continue development of the corridor. I am very supportive of Washington County’s commitment to the Red Rock Corridor and would serve as a strong partner and a tireless advocate for ongoing transit improvements throughout the County.
KARLA’S COMMITMENT TO VOTERS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY
County government’s responsibilities are very broad. My experience serving in the Minnesota State Legislature and in local government as a Cottage Grove City Council member gives me a strong foundation in understanding those responsibilities. I also understand the importance of working with my partners on the board, our partners at the capitol, staff members, and those serving in community government to overcome challenges and get things done. All residents of Washington County have my commitment to giving extensive and individual deliberation to each issue that comes before the board.
Resource recovery services
Washington County needs a revised long-term Resource Recovery strategy, to be adopted in early 2015, to divert trash from landfills, while also making efficient use of municipal solid waste. This complies with state law and the County Solid Waste Master Plan, while bolstering the local economy and protecting our natural resources. I will advocate strengthening public-private partnerships with a market based approach wherever possible.
